The Wordless Book is not a wordless novel. It is a Christian evangelistic chap book with blocks of pure colour and no words. The colours are mnemonics designed to bring to mind biblical doctrines in the mind of the viewer.

Viewers must be told the relationship of the colours to the Christian doctrine ie there is nothing intrinsic to the colours leading to a story.

Christian Haddon Spurgeon is widely regarded as the originator of the concept as early as 1866. He used black to represent sin, red for the blood of Jesus, and white representing the righteousness that God has given believers. It should be noted that not all cultures associate these attributes with these colours. Later evangelicists have added more colours; gold, green, and blue for additional attributes.
