The publication known as “The Wordless Book” is not a wordless novel. It is a chapbook with blocks of pure colour and no words. The colours are mnemonics designed to bring to mind biblical doctrines, i.e., there is no story.
Viewers must be told the relationship of the colours to the Christian doctrine, i.e., there is nothing intrinsic to the colours leading to a story.
Christian Haddon Spurgeon is widely regarded as the originator of the concept, dating back to 1866. He used black to represent sin, red to represent the blood of Jesus, and white to represent the righteousness that God has given believers. It should be noted that not all cultures associate these attributes with these colours. Later evangelists have added more colours: gold, green, and blue for additional attributes.
