Totentanz, Death and the Maiden can be seen
dancing with a chain of small figures circling their
feet. The background is made up of figures:
some alone and others in pairs.
Since the 1400s, the totentanz (aka danse macabre) has been associated with music and dancing in a chain. Robert Budzinski, in his 1924 Totentanz, has honoured this tradition with a dance in the form of a farandole, i.e., a lively chain dance.
